Monday Made It Linky- Teacher Planner and Sticker Organizer

I have been so busy these last few weeks! I went to Memphis to visit my family and then since I have been home I have been hard at work getting things ready for school...okay and going to the pool! I am super excited to share two things I have been hard at work on. The first is my teacher planner. I really wanted to use one of the super cute ones I had found on TPT but none of them fit my needs exactly so of course I had to do it the hard way and make my own. I'm very happy with it though because it is perfect for me and it is still pretty cute if I do say so myself!

I found these super cute chevron binder covers on Pinterest and they are free on TPT from A Year of Many Firsts ! They are editable and they are my favorite thing I've pinned this summer! So cute!

I bought these fabulous dividers at Target that match perfectly!

 

Okay so inside the planner we go! My first tab is "Class Info". This is where I keep my class lists, birthdays, parent communication log, and username and password list ( I can't keep track of all that!) I made the parent communication and passwords forms but I got the cute birthday paper from the Teaching Fashionista.

 



 

 

My next tab is my calendar. I also downloaded this for free on TPT from Teaching in a Small Town.

 

My next tab is for my To Do lists. I LOVE lists. They keep my brain organized and there is nothing I love more than checking off something on my to do list!! Along with my daily/weekly to do list, I have also made a monthly refection sheet where I look back on who needs to be retaught, if the whole class needs to be retaught something, if a conference needs to be scheduled, and if there are any supplies I ran out of or need. I did not have this last year and I SO needed it!

 

 

Next are my Staff Meeting and Team Meeting notes. I used regular notebook paper last year but this year I made note pages that match the rest of the sheets in my binder :)

 

Finally I have tabs for my SOL's and report card information. At the very back I put a folder that happens to match my dividers and it opens so there are 3 places to put papers in! I was so excited when I found this at Target as well!

 

Okay the next thing I made this week is a sticker organizer! I SO wish I could take credit for this amazing idea but I can't. I got the idea from Miss Kindergarten a looooong time ago and it seemed like such a daunting task so I kept putting it off. Well that was silly because it was really easy! The teacher before me left MANY stickers...all jammed into this one bag! Eeek!

 

So I went through every single sheet of stickers, decided if I wanted to keep it or throw it out. I put them in piles and labeled them with post-its.

 

Then I put each stack into a sleeve in this over-the-door shoe organizer (now sticker organizer)!

 

Next I made, printed, and laminated labels. Then I punched a hole in the label as well as at the top of each sleeve and tied the labels on with ribbon! Done!

 

The first two rows are all organized by month/theme.

 

 The next two rows are just any categories that didn't really fit into the themes like smiley faces, cartoons, etc...

 

So there you have my Monday Made Its! I can't wait to see what everyone else made!

Monday Made It: Teacher's Toolbox

 

This is the first time I have linked up with 4th Grade Frolics for her Monday Made It Linky! I made a teacher toolbox this week and I am super excited about it! But I thought...how lame! I can't put that on Monday Made It!  I have to be the only teacher left out there who has not made a teacher toolbox! But to my surprise, I found many teachers out there who have recently made theirs as well! I have been DYING for one of these for over a year and I couldn't be more excited that I finally made it! So I decided to share it!

 

First, I spray painted my toolbox purple, my favorite!

While this was drying, I made simple, plain labels in Word that I printed on colored cardstock and cut out.

 

 

I had a little help with this...

 

 

 

Next, I glued on ribbon to decorate them.

 

 

 

Excuse me...Are you almost done???

 

 

 

Then, the easiest way I could think of to keep the labels in the drawers was the tiny glue dots! One in each of the top corners holds them in place securely and can't be seen! This was so much easier than I thought it would be!

 

 

 

 



Favorite Pins Friday!

Okay I'm a little late...favorite pins Saturday! But I am addicted to Pinterest, as I'm pretty sure we all are, so I couldn't resist linking up with The First Grade Parade! Call me crazy but I am getting really excited for the beginning of school so most of my pins lately have been related to school.

 

 

1. This is my favorite pin of the week. These are free editable chevron binder covers by A Year of Many Firsts. I have already personalized them with the titles of all my binders and printed. Done!

 

 

2. I so wish I had these last year. If I had a dollar for everytime one of my students broke a pencil and started waving it at me during the middle of a lesson...I am SO making bins with these cute little labels this year!

 

 

3. I have seen a lot of these floating around on a lot of blogs and I am so jealous. I absolutely love the polka dots and chevron on this one! Definitely have to make!

 

 

4. I love this! It's stuff we all know but a great reminder and a great way to stay focused at the beginning of the year. Very helpful!

 

5. This blog post is amazing by Welcome to Room 36! SO many amazing ideas for the beginning of the year. This gets me so excited to try some new things!

3. I am dying for this Better Life Bag. These are so cute and handmade. The owner of this company didn't even intend to start it! She just wanted a cute diaper bag so she made it herself and posted a picture on facebook and everyone went crazy! She decided if she was going to start a business she wanted to give back in some way. She found women who were having trouble making a living to help her craft these bags. What an amazing story!

 I have been on vacation for the last few days at Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada...which means I did not have access to my phone or internet! As soon as I crossed the border back into the US today I checked my e-mail and I was so surprised and excited to see that Erin at The Short and Sassy Teacher had nominated me for the Liebster Award! 1. What is YOUR favorite subject to teach? Definitely writing. It is something that I am passionate about doing so I want to instill that it my students. Plus I LOVE reading their adorable writitngs!

2. What is your favorite book to read to your class? I LOVE reading the Mo Willems pigeon and elephant books to my kids. We all just laugh and laugh and laugh. Hilarious.

3. What is the one thing in your classroom you could not live without? Sharpies. Somehow I find a reason to use one every single day.

4. Coke or Pepsi?? 100% no hesitation coke! Diet coke that is :)

5. What is the last thing you purchased? I guess technically that would be dinner at Chick-fil-a...but that is not exciting. The last thing I purchased before I went on my vacation to Niagara Falls was a teacher planner from TPT!

6. What is your favorite memory from the summer of 2013 so far? So far my favorite memory is going to Niagara Falls with my family.

7. What are you most looking forward to this next school year? Implementing Math Their Way. My whole team went to a training on it this summer and we can't wait to get started!

8. If you could have a shopping spree at any store, where would you go? Loft! I just discovered it recently and I can't get enough!

9. What is the food you most often crave? Easy...chocolate! Chocolate anything really....chocolate candies, chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake, brownies, chocolate covered strawberries....I could keep going but I'll stop there. 

10. Where is your ideal vacation spot? Well I don't have one particular spot...But my ideal vacation is a cruise! Can't wait for my cruise coming up in August!

Picture Book Linky: Books to Teach Math Concepts

 



I am excited to link up again with First Grade and Fabulous for her 2nd Picture Book Linky! I am also excited that it is to share picture books to help teach math concepts! In my experience, doing a read aloud using a book that helps explain the math concept as an introduction to the lesson has worked wonders! It really helps them relate to math on a real level. It shows them that you will actually use math in your day to day life!



At the beginning of the year I always read Ten Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss to teach counting. We then do an activity afterwards where students draw a picture of their head and have to glue a certain number of apples on top of it!



 

Another book I also use to teach counting at the beginning of the year is 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews.

 



These are my FAVORITE books to teach Math. Not only are they my favorite, they are my some of my students' favorite books that I read all year! They are so original, funny, and teach the concepts so well. The mice get themselves into sticky situations and use math to figure out how to save themselves! I highly recommend all the Mouse books by Ellen Stoll Walsh.

 

For later in the year to teach addition. This is fabulous! We stop after every page to discuss and work through the problem on the white board. My kids love it!

Two years ago, fractions were added to our curriculum in Kindergarten...so I found this book which is so great! It is about a brother and sister who have to share everything and they dad makes them split everything into two EQUAL halves.

I also use this book to teach fractions on a higher level once my students understand the concept of whole and half. It has repetitive text and the kids really get into it!
